California Mail Order Nursery

Policies & Shipping info

Our prices are in effect through November 30, 2018. You may order T-shirts and gift cards without the plant shipping minimum of $30. The cost of the above items includes shipping and handling.

We take a lot of time to make sure your plants will arrive in excellent condition. Our plants are packed with the utmost care. Their intact roots are placed in plastic bags, then each plant is securely cushioned in a bed of shredded paper.

Minimum:

Minimum order for plants is $30.00.

Refunds:

For refunds under $5.00, a credit memo will be issued.

Shipping:

Unless otherwise requested, we ship UPS to western states and UPS 3-day Air or USPS Priority Airmail to the rest of the USA.

Requests For Shipping Dates:

While we do our best to meet your requested shipping date, plant availability and extreme hot or cold temperatures may affect the exact week your order will be shipped.

Plant orders are packed on Monday and picked up by UPS each Tuesday morning. To ensure your plants arrive in good condition, they must reach their destination by the end of the week, so that they don't spend the weekend in a sweltering warehouse somewhere. Thus, most plant shipments leave our nursery on Tuesdays, especially those traveling cross-country via 3-DAY AIR.

Occasionally, we do ship on Wednesdays to California customers or to customers who have requested 2-DAY AIR.

If you would like your shipment sent a particular week, your order, including payment information, must be placed no later than 2:00 pm the previous Friday.

We cannot make changes to orders any later than noon the Saturday before the order is to be shipped.

Shipping Seasons:

We are now shipping year round to most areas in entire USA, weather permitting.

Small Band:
2-½" square x 5" deep
Medium Band:
3" square x 5-½" deep (the majority of our perennials & grasses)
Squat Band:
3-¾" square x 4-½" deep

Occasionally, plants will be available in liners (2-¼ square x 3-¼ deep) or landscape plugs, and will be discounted $1.00-$1.50 off the regular price.

Digging Dog plants are removed from their containers, and their firm, intact rootballs are placed inside plastic bags prior to shipping.

Customer Responsibility

Here at Digging Dog, our top priority is that you are delighted with the plants we ship to you. To help guarantee their success, please make sure they are suited for your area. While this may seem like a somewhat daunting task, there are some excellent ways to research the plants in question:

We take extra steps to make certain the transition from our nursery to your garden is as painless as possible for both you and your new plants. We blend our own potting mix, which includes a local sandy loam.

We do not spray herbicides or fungicides and use organic products to control most pests and diseases. All of our plants are either grown outside or in open-air cold frames, save for a few enclosed greenhouses that protect cuttings, seed crops and newly potted plants. This exposure to the natural elements creates a strong and vigorous plant that is ready to dig its roots into your garden and take off!

Please know that we will ship any plant to any location in the continental US except for Florida (see current agricultural restrictions) just about any time of year. Therefore, it is up to you to make sure that the plants you choose are appropriate for your climate zone, as well as when the best time to receive them is. Utilizing the resources above should make responsible plant shopping a cinch and assure the sweet success of a flourishing landscape.

Shared Customer Responsibility

Backorders:

When you place an order and one or several of the plants that you have ordered are currently unavailable, there are several options. You can select a substitute, postpone shipment until all of the plants are ready, or place a new order including the currently unavailable plant or plants. We will waive the minimum plant total and handling fee, and reduce shipping charges on this new order.

Current Staff's Favorite Plant

Helianthus 'Sheila's Sunshine', Persicaria 'Summer Dance', and Selinum wallichianum

Helianthus ‘Sheila’s Sunshine - P-0461

The sunflower was once an emblem of the Sun God of the Incas. Our sunflowers tolerate a wide range of garden soils, attract bees, and make great cut flowers. Blooms early August – October.

Persicaria ‘Summer Dance’ - P-1312

With foliage that’s close to lime-green, and spiky floral tails that approach the scarlet spectrum of rosy pink, this slow spreading perennial is sure to please. Happiest in semishade with ample moisture. Blooms August–November.

Selinum wallichianum - P-1406

This refined Himalayan beauty happens to be one of our favorite perennial umbellifers. With untold elegance, infinitely divided leaves craft a delicate, lacelike transparency. The compact yet airy green canopy is framed by distinctive, purple-infused branching stems that elevate a charming, late season display of white flattened umbels.

Subduing the riotous array of summertime blooms, it seldom needs staking, and appreciates a well draining moist niche. Blooms June–August.
