Digging Dog Nursery Grasses

Imperata cylindrica
‘Red Baron’
at Digging Dog

Japanese Blood Grass

Imperata

Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’ full sun  partial shade

Although its common name is a bit eerie, this non-invasive, slow growing grass is absolutely beautiful. While other perennial grasses lose their color come late summer and fall, ‘Red Baron’ stays vibrantly red throughout the season. Only the base of each upright leaf blade is bright green.

To ensure the most vivid red of all, plant this grass where it will get three or more hours of sunlight each day. To create the semblance of an all-day sunset, plant it en masse along with red-petioled Arctostaphylos uva-ursi ‘Wood’s Compact’. Or, for a cooling combination, plant it with white flowering Anemone ‘Andrea Atkinson’.

Size: 2' high x 18" wide; hardy to zone 6.

Customer Comment:

“The clematis I ordered was especially impressive--nicely staked, sporting two new shoots.  The roots of all the plants were very well developed and I'm looking forward to enjoying all of them this season and many more to come.”
