Origanum

Oregano

The Greeks called this ancient herb oros ganos, meaning “joy of the mountain,” and legend has it that Aphrodite created the sweet, spicy scent of its leaves as a symbol of happiness. A sun-loving genus hailing from the Mediterranean, Origanums display small, tubular, whorled flowers often arranged in showy overlapping bracts, and prefer well drained soil.

Endless quantities of pendulous green and rosy hued bracts nearly encase this treasured Origanum’s tiny pink flowers, while pairs of round, felted, gray-green leaves attire the trailing reddish stems. With a diminutive demeanor that defies its stalwart nature, Showy Dittany begs for sharp draining soil and merits an elevated position beside Lavandula ‘Victorian Amethyst’.

Blooms August–October.

Size: 10" high x 12" wide; hardy to zone 8.
