Dierama trichorhizum at Digging Dog
Fairy Wand Flower
This spectacular, little-known corm comes from South Africa and enhances just about any design situation, especially when it can be viewed from below. Surprisingly tough and undeniably enchanting, Fairy Wands withstand coastal winds and fairly low temperatures, while appreciating a well draining soil. Dierama trichorhizum
Hailing from South Africa’s higher elevations, this intriguing Dierama is not only the most diminutive, but one of the hardiest as well.
Low bladed greenery gives way to slender erect wands, each bearing up to five pendant, delicate-looking flowers characterized by soft mauve shades and openly flared petals. Papery white bracts with red-brown flecks and veins accompany the bell-shaped blooms, while small cormlets produced at lower leaf axils are unique to this species. Zone 6/7.
Blooms June–August. Size: 15"–2' high x 12" wide; hardy to zone 7. Dierama trichorhizum (P-1256) Each $7.00
