Thalictrum

Meadow-Rue

Once upon a time, the newborn infant was placed upon a pillow filled with Meadow-Rue to ensure a prosperous life. Thalictrum means “to flourish,” and it does, with elegant foamlike sprays that resemble Baby’s Breath, and rounded, finely cut, compound foliage. Tougher than it appears, Thalictrum is the perfect choice for the border.

The species epithet alludes to the stylish, loosely tailored pedestal of blue-green Columbine-like foliage. Racing upward, numerous tall branched stems house the glaucous lavender-infused leaves, and later elevate dark purple buds. Petite, powder pufflike double flowers with fluffy, pronounced stamens in rich rosy purple shades form soft lilac clouds, casting fanciful accents on Stipa arundinacea’s low mounding form.

Blooms May–June.

Size: 3'–4' high x 12" wide; hardy to zone 5.
