Stewartia

Stewartia pseudocamellia full sun  partial shade  new plant

Some 200 years ago, at the opening of Kew Gardens, John Stuart, Earl of Bute, presented a Stewartia to the Welch Princess Augusta; the honor was somewhat skewed by the misspelling of the Earl’s name. Blame it on Linnaeus. The Earl’s choice is still prized for its orange, gray and brown exfoliating bark, lovely in winter, and the profuse white Camellia-like flowers that appear in summer, when few woody plants are blooming. Bright green leaves are glossy beneath, later transmuting deep purple-red autumn colors.

A somewhat challenging deciduous tree, this Stewartia requires ample moisture in well drained, lime free soil, and dislikes wind. We think its year-round interest and beauty deserve the extra attention at planting time. Grows slowly. Medium Band.

Blooms late July–August.

Size: 20'–40' high x 20'–40' wide; hardy to zone 5.
