Monarda x ‘Violet Queen’
at Digging Dog

Monarda

Wild Bergamot/Beebalm

This genus was named after Dr. Nicolas Monardes, a Spanish physician whose Joyfull Newes Out of the New Founde Worlde was the first book to be published about the flora of the Americas. A summer blooming member of the Mint family, everything about this plant is intriguing.

Excellent in arrangements, its jaunty whorls of Sage-like blossoms and decorative bracts attract butterflies and hummingbirds while holding our interest even in winter. Lining erect and robust stems, its opposite leaves are deliciously scented.

An engaging addition to the border or a meadow setting, Bergamot offers a pleasing contrast to the more undefined forms of the garden, as well as to the linear aspect of grasses. Happiest in moist, fertile soil, Monarda’s dense clump needs to be divided every 2 to 3 years. The following cultivars exhibit excellent resistance to powdery mildew.

Zone 3/4.

Crowning red-tinged bracts, this Monarda’s vivid lavender-violet flowers will reign in your garden. Its downy soft, grayish green foliage makes a pleasing, fragrant base for the colorful and curved, tubular blooms.

Blooms June – August.

Size: 2-1/2'–3' high x 15" wide. Zone 3/4.

Summer Savings at the Nursery

Straight from the Border: Waterwise Tips

Has the drought got you down? Are you thinking about ripping out your lawn or other water thirsty plants? Don't worry! Digging Dog Nursery is recognized by Dave's Garden as one of the top five mail order nurseries for our wide selection of drought tolerant plants. We carry a fabulous variety of Cistus, Euphorbias, Thymes, Sun Roses,  Sedums, Kniphofias, Origanums, Eryngiums, Lavender, and hard to find, lesser known grasses such as Poa cita, Pennisetum, and Schizachryiums.

Consider planting waterwise groundcovers between your existing plants, or positioning plants close together to reduce the amount of exposed soil. This in turn will reduce evaporation. Heavy mulching with organic matter will also conserve and retain moisture. Compost, well rotted manure or humus from a local dairy or vineyard can benefit your garden in several ways: weed suppression, water conservation and fantastic fertilization!

Try to be conscious with your water use, remember that selecting a drought tolerant plant is only the first step. Once it is established, deep and frequent waterings help train the roots to grow down rather than out, preventing crown rot and helping your plant become much more drought tolerant in the long run. If the drought becomes very severe in your area, a hard and aggressive pruning combined with a heavy mulch can work wonders in preserving your precious perennials!

“Your plants are about two times theirs (another nursery).  You are the best from what I can see.”
