Aristolochia

Aristolochia macrophylla full sun  partial shade

The handsome, densely cloaked screen generated by this deciduous climber's mature flush of heart-shaped, overlapping foliage will dampen street noise and shield you from the neighbors. A quick growing, deer resistant native of the American Southeast, Aristolochia macrophylla’s glossy, dark green leafage softens any prospect, providing an outstanding palette on which to paint your garden color, as well as indispensable fodder for swallowtail butterflies. Not quite hidden by large leaves that grow up to a foot across, the 2 in. long mahogany and cream tubular blooms flare into 3 lobes, resembling a Dutchman’s pipe.

Its genus name, derived from a Greek phrase “to assist in childbirth,” pays homage to this plant’s supposed healing abilities. Large Band.

Blooms May–June.

Size: 20'–30' high x 0" & spreading; hardy to zone 4.
