Erigeron
Fleabane
With a carefree guise that barely hints at their stalwart nature, Erigeron promises to embellish any little spot: cracks and crevices, window boxes, between paving stones or a border’s foreground. Content in well-draining, even sandy soil, these vigorous, no-nonsense perennials parade daisy-like blooms for months on end and can easily endure periodic dry spells.
A slow spreading stoloniferous evergreen, this fetching selection of our American native was discovered on Clarice Keeling’s Virginia Beach property near the banks of the Lynnhaven River. Butterfly-friendly, fringed, fine-rayed and abundant—the perky, yellow-centered, daisy-like white flowers impart a soft lavender blush atop sturdy foot-tall stems. Large paddle-shaped gray-green leaves with serrated margins and a fuzzy finish describe the tidy, thick, ground-hugging mat that possesses enough brawn to easily tackle heat, humidity, dry shade and lean soil, yet detests too much fertility.
